Lapistan is a fictitious hostile country used in the Loyal Arrow, a NATO exercise of air warfare held in Northern Sweden in 8 June 2009 – 16 June 2009. According to the scenario, Lapistan is an undemocratic unstable country that, ruled by a military clique hosts terrorist training camps. The exercise's scenario is centered over a fictitious conflict over oil and natural gas with Bothnia, a fictitious neighbouring NATO country, with some presence of nearby neutral fictitious countries Nordistan and Suomia, who refer to Norway and Finland, respectively.
The name has given rise to some controversy as possibly denigrating to Sami people and Muslims. Some Swedish political analysts have also expressed concern that such a name may run countrary to Swedish stance of international neutrality.
