Lapistan is a fictitious hostile country used in the Loyal Arrow, a NATO exercise of air warfare held in Northern Sweden in 8 June 200916 June 2009. According to the scenario, Lapistan is an undemocratic unstable country that, ruled by a military clique hosts terrorist training camps. The exercise's scenario is centered over a fictitious conflict over oil and natural gas with Bothnia, a fictitious neighbouring NATO country, with some presence of nearby neutral fictitious countries Nordistan and Suomia, who refer to Norway and Finland, respectively.[1]

Controversy[]

The name has given rise to some controversy as possibly denigrating to Sami people and Muslims.[2] Some Swedish political analysts have also expressed concern that such a name may run countrary to Swedish stance of international neutrality.
