Shoop Da Whoop

From Annex

Jump to: navigation, search

Shoop Da Whoop” is a popular Internet meme.

The meme is based out of a picture of Dragon Ball Z character Cell, which had been edited with Microsoft Paint to look like blackface. The picture was edited further to a short GIF file which shouted “I’MA FIRIN’ MAH LAZER!” and fired a large blue laser while exclaiming “BLAH!” The meme has become incredibly popular on sites such as YouTube and has been used as the basis of many videos on that site. However, this is usually only shortened to the blue laser/“BLAH” part.

[edit] Origin

“Shoop Da Whoop” also appears in hacked flash files on 4chan, where the sound is turned down, invoking the user to turn the volume up. Those unaware of the hack then are surprised when the “Shooped” flash file reveals itself with DMX’s “Where the Hood At?

There have been several parodies of Shoop Da Whoop. Where “Shoop Da Whoop” uses blackface in an attempt to stereotype black people, a popular parody uses “Weird Al” Yankovic’s “White & Nerdy” to whiteface.

[edit] The Lazer Collection

Another popular parody was created by Dom Fera in 2007 known as “The Lazer Collection,”[1],[2] which moved away from blackfacing to shouting “BLAH!” while the laser shoots out of an object’s mouth. “The Lazer Collection” created a new Internet meme based on “Shoop Da Whoop”: “Doctor Octagonapus,” a parody of Alfred Molina’s portrayal of Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2.
