Import/ExportEdit

Hi guys! Just wanted to let you know that there's an alternative to copying and pasting -- you can Export pages from Wikipedia by using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Export -- it's listed under "Special pages" in the WP toolbox. (Help is at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Export). If you'd like to preserve the page history, uncheck the box "Include only the current revision, not the full history". It's not necessary to import the full page history, but may be helpful to you in some circumstances. You can export single pages, or many at once by entering a list or a category name.

Using Special:Export displays an XML file in your browser, which you can File/Save or right-click on and save to your computer.

If you're feeling ambitious, you can then use any text editor (Notepad, Word, GoogleDocs, etc) to alter the XML document. I usually Find all instances of "[[" and Replace them with "[[Wikipedia:", and Find all "</text>" (the last tag in the article file) and Replace with "{{Wikipedia}} </text>", which places the required attribution template in each article.

If you are also exporting the page history, you may want to Replace all opening "<username>" tags with "en.wp-<username>" or something similar, so that the page history of the imported page clearly attributes the edits to WP users, and it won't appear that those users have Wikia accounts. (This will also prevent the occasional rare clash of account names.)

When the file is ready, you (as admins) can use Special:Import, which is listed under Restricted pages on the "Special pages" list here in your Wikia toolbox. (Help is at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Import).

Hope that helps!

Trivia?Edit

Is this the place for the trivia sections too?82.151.94.72 13:51, 11 August 2007 (UTC)---

Sure, just post it here :D Renmiri 02:27, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

History Edit

All article histories should be directly transwikied along with the articles. If you just copy and paste the articles here, you are basically stealing them.

Well all the pages we are bringing here are being pushed out of Wikipedia so we are just giving them a home, not stealing. With that said, importing them with history is preferrable to copy and paste but alas, only me and Deck can use import so copy and paste and a link to the original history is acceptable too Renmiri 02:29, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure the GFDL requires page histories to be publicly available somewhere; if it's deleted from Wikipedia, then it's not. --Andrew Nagy 18:27, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Importing pages Edit

Since this Wikicity is all about copying pages from Wikipedia, normal users should be able to use the Special:Import function instead of just administrators.

Agreed, I just don't know how to make it available to all. For the moment, just post a request on my talk page and I'll do it, ok ? Renmiri 02:26, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
UPDATE: Special:Import function is now available to all users :D Renmiri 17:01, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Answers.com and Wikibin Edit

I would like to note that I have just discovered a site, Wikibin, which may be helpful in that it contains both articles on AFD and ones that have already been deleted. Quin 23:44, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Answers.com is also very helpful. Unlike Wikibin, the articles there contain links and have much better Wikipedia formatting, including images. However, the article’s text is not as up to date to Wikipedia’s as is Wikibin’s. Quin 08:41, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Great catch Quin! Renmiri 17:02, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Internet.wikia Edit

Another Wikia site, <http://internet.wikia.com>, is accepting articles about websites and internet phenomena that are being deleted from Wikipedia -- would be great if these two wikis can build a working relationship so the pool of rescuers can grow.  :) — Catherine@fandom (talk) 17:53, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Yay, awesome Cat! Thanks for the heads up!! Renmiri 17:00, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

New transwiki tools Edit

I noticed you guys are testing out some new transwiki tools! This looks really cool, and I can't wait for it to be finished. I'd also like to volunteer myself for anything I might be able to help out with. I've already been working on converting many Wikipedia templates to work on Wikia wikis for Digimon Wiki, and that alone might save some other people from some headaches. -- Ned Scott 05:01, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Oh goody, more help!!! Grin Txs Ned! Renmiri 17:04, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Deletionpedia Edit

This seems very interesting. From their main page: “Deletionpedia is an archive of pages which have been deleted from the English-language Wikipedia. Deletionpedia is not a wiki: you cannot edit the pages uploaded here. An automated bot uploads pages as they are deleted from Wikipedia.” It uses MediaWiki software, and it’s even supposed to upload the articles’ edit histories. Quin 06:13, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

ScopeEdit

I am glad to see this edit! I definitely think we should not only cover fictional elements, but also related items including popular culture, television, science fiction, and video games. Best, --A Nobody 05:34, March 30, 2010 (UTC)
