The Oath is a 2005 short drama film directed by Nathan Collett, written by Collett and Njuguna Wakanyote, and produced by Hot Sun Films.

BackgroundEdit

Set in 1950s Kenya during the Mau Mau uprising under British colonialism, the film portrays the struggle between two brothers on opposite sides of the conflict. Filmed in Kenya, many of the actors in the film were descendants of Mau Mau fighters, and it was produced with their input, as an educational tool of a time when Mau Mau was less appreciated in Kenyan society than it is today. The film received critical acclaim for its balanced and positive portrayal of the Mau Mau and their struggle for independence from the British.
