History
WPSD debuted on May 28, 1957 airing an analog signal on VHF channel 6. It has been owned by the Paxton family for its entire existence alongside Paducah's major newspaper, The Paducah Sun "PSD" stands for Paducah Sun-Democrat, the paper's name at the time the station launched. Sam Champion, who is the current weekday weather anchor on Good Morning America, got his start at the station. Its transmitter, northwest of Bandana, is in an area ofBallard County, Kentucky known as Monkeys Eyebrow a fact which had been noted during WPSD's nightly sign-off message.
Through a news share agreement, the station had produced a nightly prime time newscast forFox affiliate KBSI (owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group) called Local 6 News at 9 on Fox 23. This arrangement expired September 30, 2010 after which a new partnership between that channel and CBS affiliate KFVS-TV (owned by Raycom Media) was established. KBSI now airs an hour-long prime time broadcast every night at 9 originating from KFVS' studios in the Hirsch Tower on Broadway Avenue in DowntownCape Girardeau, Missouri. This is the second 9 o'clock production of KFVS as it had previously produced broadcasts in that time slot on low-powered CW affiliates WQTV-LP/WQWQ-LP. [3]
On October 3, WPSD brought back a nightly prime time show known as The Nine on its RTV-affiliated subchannel. [4] Like all RTV affiliates in the Central Time Zone, WPSD-DT2 also airs Daytime weekday mornings at 8 for an hour. Compared with the other big three stations in themarket, WPSD has traditionally covered stories more from Western Kentucky since it is based in Paducah. KFVS tends to focus on Southeastern Missouri while the newscasts of ABC affiliate WSIL-TV focus almost exclusively on Southern Illinois. While WPSD produced the news for KBSI, which is based in Cape Girardeau, a regional summary of coverage was provided along with stories from Western Kentucky.
